An Evening of Public Art — Transmissions: Roberto Clemente

PHLAFF is excited to partner with ArtPhilly to present Transmissions: Roberto Clemente, a public video and sound art installation by artist Raúl Romero! The installation is a part of ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 Festival celebration.

What is ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 Festival?

ArtPhilly’s What Now: 2026 represents a major collaborative moment in Philadelphia and the surrounding region. The city-wide multi-disciplinary festival will foreground Philadelphia’s creative voices, placing artists, neighborhoods and arts organizations at the center of critical civic dialogue on our country’s past, present, and– most importantly– future. The collaborators include WXPN, WRTI, The Museum of the American Revolution, The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, PHILADANCO!, BalletX, First Person Arts, Mural Arts Philadelphia and more.

History and art are integral to Philadelphia’s identity. Over six weeks, What Now: 2026 will weave these legacies together by commissioning and presenting new work that responds to the complexities of our country's 250th anniversary. Over 30 original commissions will be presented, including performances ranging from music, dance, theater, visual arts, film, culinary arts, and storytelling. By seeking out and supporting imaginative collaborations across communities and institutions we will generate new art and amplify the creativity and ingenuity of our talented artists. We will demonstrate that Philadelphia is the destination for the 250th anniversary and an important cultural and historical destination for any year.

What Is Transmissions: Roberto Clemente?

This collaboration with the ArtPhilly will feature a public video and sound art installation by artist Raúl Romero with themes related to Puerto Rico and Roberto Clemente.

The event presents a unique opportunity: an evening of viewing baseball footage of Roberto Clemente, paired with old, unseen footage featuring Puerto Rican life from the island and the diaspora, at the iconic Roberto Clemente Park. This initiative celebrates America's pastime and pays homage to the first Latino player inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame.

The activation of the park will provide audiences with new perspectives, highlighting the interwoven nature of our cultures through sport and the universal language of Film. The theme of “What Now” aligns with the central themes of this event, inviting people to reflect on the site’s history and significance. As the city of Philadelphia continues to grow and its neighborhoods evolve, this outdoor screening offers a unique educational opportunity for the local community to learn about its rich history through sound and film.

There will be popsicles, pastelillos, and domino tables. Walkups welcome!
