GRIOT 2124

About the Film

GRIOT 2124 is a seven-episode series that follows a traveler from the year 2124 who arrives in Puerto Rico in 2024 from a future where racism has been eradicated. Seeking to understand how this transformation became possible, GRIOT embarks on a journey through the archipelago’s Black and Afro-descendant artistic, cultural, and historical legacy.

Through encounters with artists, cultural workers, scholars, and communities, the series explores how Afro-Puerto Rican creativity has shaped the nation’s identity and continues to challenge dominant narratives. At the center of GRIOT’s discovery is Tiznando el país: Visualidades y representaciones, an artistic and cultural movement that helped redefine Puerto Rico’s collective consciousness by making visible the depth, brilliance, and power of Black and Afro-descendant contributions.

Blending speculative storytelling, documentary exploration, and cultural memory, GRIOT 2124 invites audiences to imagine a transformed Puerto Rico while honoring the artists and communities whose work makes that future possible.
