Special Presentations — Mataron A Pedro
As we approach the in-person programming component of our Week Seis, our team at PHLAFF is excited to share that we’re collaborating on three screenings of Mataron A Pedro in Puerto Rico. Join us on July 2nd at La Goyca and July 5th + July 6th at La Respuesta to experience and celebrate a look into the life of Pedro Albizu Campos.
About Mataron A Pedro
In 1930s Puerto Rico, Mataron a Pedro follows Pedro Albizu Campos and his wife as they are drawn into a growing labor movement. When desperate farmers ask Pedro to confront the island’s white police chief and colonial leadership over island-wide strikes and unjust conditions in the sugar cane fields, the couple must navigate love, conviction, and the rising pressure of a system determined to silence dissent.
The film, directed by Kristian Mercado, received the Latino Public Broadcasting Award in 2025.
July 2nd at La Goyco
This July 2, join us for a community screening of Mataron A Pedro in collaboration with the Cinema Paradiso Cine Club. Following the screening, there will be a special conversation with actor Ismael Cruz Córdova alongside the creative team.
The evening will be dedicated to dialogue, memory, and community. Together, we will reflect on the legacy of Pedro Albizu Campos and Laura Meneses, two fundamental figures in the history of Puerto Rico, and how their struggles continue to inspire conversations today.

Closing Night at La Respuesta
This July 5th, join us for a special night with the cast and crew of Mataron a Pedro. This special presentation will wrap PHLAFF’s fifteenth season in Puerto Rico as part of our commitments to collaboration and community building.
The screening of the film will be followed by a brief conversation with the project's cast and crew. You won’t want to miss it!

An Additional Screening at La Respuesta!
Due to popular demand, an additional presentation of Mataron A Pedro will be happening on Monday, July 6th at La Respuesta! The presentation will follow the same format as the former on July 5th, including a screening of the film and a brief conversation with the project’s cast and crew.
