SATURDAY AT PHLAFF – WEEK TRES: A MARATHON OF FILMS THAT CELEBRATE IDENTITY

As PHLAFF 2025’s Week Tres reaches its conclusion, Saturday at Ulises transforms into an all-day cinematic feast, offering something for every generation, sensibility, and language. From morning to night, audiences are invited to immerse themselves in films that ask urgent questions and offer heartfelt portraits of identity, migration, friendship, grief, youth, and home.

Held at Ulises and Studio 105 @ Ray Philly (1525 N American St Studio 104 & Studio 105) from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, this Saturday lineup features award-winning features, LOLA-nominated documentaries, and thought-provoking shorts that bridge countries, cultures, and emotional landscapes.

11:00 AM – 11:30 AM | All Ages Shorts Block

Kick off your Saturday with a colorful and conscious collection of shorts made for all ages — and especially families. These films highlight environmental awareness, the sweetness of childhood friendships, and emotional resilience in the face of loss.

  • Saq Nikté y El Espíritu de la Máscara (Guatemala, Uruguay) – A K’iche’ invocation unleashes a mystical encounter between an artisan girl and a curious spirit.

  • Romina (Mexico) – Tiny aliens, a lost helmet, and two friends on a cosmic search.

  • Cuidemos el Planeta - EL BOSQUE (Argentina) – A bonfire turns into a forest fire, forcing a group of children to understand the consequences — and power — of environmental care.

  • Pizza Monster (United States) – A hilarious ode to pizza obsession, family chaos, and the lesson that good things come to those who wait.

  • El Colibrí (United States) – A young girl repairs her mother’s last gift, helping her father heal through a simple act of care.

🕦 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM | Campo de Santana (LOLA Award Nominee– Los Features)

This lush, meditative documentary journeys through one of Rio’s most infamous public parks. As filmmakers discover, its layered contradictions mirror the city itself: beautiful and fraught, misunderstood and alive.

🕐 1:15 – 2:45 PM | Senhoritas (LOLA Award Nominee– Los Features)

In this introspective Brazilian feature, 70-year-old Livia’s structured life is upended by the return of an old friend. What unfolds is a quiet but powerful reckoning with repressed desires, aging, and the freedom that comes from choosing oneself.

🕒 3:00 – 3:30 PM | Los Shorts: Like a Virgin

A charming, vulnerable short about a young woman facing her fears around intimacy on a blind date arranged by her best friend. Relatable, hilarious, and tender.

🕞 3:30 – 4:15 PM | La Sal De Mi Tierra (Los Features)

This documentary amplifies the voices of Latin American immigrants in Philadelphia. Their stories of resilience, adaptation, and unexpected reconnection with their heritage shed light on migration’s emotional layers.

🕟 4:30 – 5:45 PM | EL TURBIO (Los Features)

Deep in Patagonia, eight families live off-grid in harmony with nature — but political and economic threats loom large. Shot over a year of immersive living, El Turbio is a powerful meditation on land, belonging, and what’s worth protecting.

This deeply affecting block centers around youth on the edge — facing new identities, relationships, and awakenings.

  • XIGARRO (Mexico) – A bullied teen reveals her secret identity during a party where friendships and pasts collide.

  • The Odd Year (United States) – A New Year’s Eve trip spirals into a psychedelic, emotional reckoning — and the beginning of healing.

  • First Check (United States) – A teen's first job becomes a window into adulthood, sacrifice, and the bond he shares with his sister.

  • My Father and the Beach (Brazil) – A futuristic fable about a father-son beach trip that becomes something far more mysterious and meaningful.

🕢 7:15 – 9:00 PM | The Compatriots (Los Features)
