Past Programming

La Sala Libre

This Transmedia Project, La Sala Libre, is a Migration story experience that documents and traces the colonization and exodus of the people of Puerto Rico throughout the United States. The seven-weekend residency program was an exploration of how a people’s identity has been systematically dispersed throughout its history with America’s colonization and the voyage in finding our way home.

On August 24th, PHLAFF had the opportunity to collaborate and screen Recipes from Yuiza’s Kitchen during the residency—tracing a Puerto Rican community from North Philly to Puerto Rico’s northeastern coast in search of lost recipes. The film screening was followed by a special conversation of Bad Bunny’s DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS with director Ari Manuel Cruz.

Puerto-Rican Stories: Meet and Greet with 9 Millones

On September 25th, 2025, 9 Millones collaborated with CAICU and AFROTAINO for Puerto-Rican Stories: Meet and Greet with 9 Millones. The gathering invited storytellers, researchers, community leaders, and changemakers interested in telling stories of Boricuas in Philadelphia, all hosted at Ulises. 9 Millones also facilitated a Círculo de Memoria with the Norris Square Senior Community Center community during their time in Philadelphia. Amazing work!

Feminist Poetry Festival "Julia Vive"

Centro Integral de la Mujer — Madre Tierra, together with the Julia de Burgos Library at Taller Puertorriqueño (host/venue partner) and the Philadelphia Latino Arts & Film Festival, held a global meeting of poetry, freedom, and resistance.

The festival honored Julia de Burgos, symbol of rebellion and muse of freedom, calling upon all voices who transform pain into word and word into action.

The festival highlighted voices in Spanish—poets, writers, activists, and dreamers whose words reflect freedom, sorority, and justice. The selected poems formed part of the event and our Anthology "Julia Vive".

The event was held on November 22 at Taller Puertorriqueño, in the framework of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
