PHLAFF Co-Presenting Film Screening at PAAFF 2023: Unseen

PHLAFF is very excited to co-present at The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival (PAAFF) this year. Our team will be co-presenting the documentary Unseen, directed by Set Hernandez and produced by the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective.

PAAFF is a non-profit organization founded in 2008 dedicated to supporting and highlighting the experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through creative, community-focused programs. In addition to film events, the volunteer-run organization also presents supporting programming such as live performances, chef demonstrations, lectures, and educational workshops during the festival and throughout the year.

Unseen is the latest film from Set Hernandez and the Undocumented Filmmakers Collective:

Most people dream of a better future. Pedro, an aspiring social worker, is no different. However, as a blind, undocumented immigrant, Pedro faces political restrictions to obtain his college degree, secure a job as a health care provider, and support his family. As he finally graduates, uncertainty looms over Pedro. What starts as a journey to provide mental health for his community ultimately transforms into Pedro’s path toward his healing.

Through experimental cinematography and sound, unseen reimagines a cinema accessible for blind/low vision audiences, while exploring the intersections of immigration, disability, and mental health.

The film is set to play at Asian Arts Initiative on Monday, November 6th at 6:30 PM and will be followed by a post-screening Q&A. You can buy tickets and learn more about the event here. This film will be screened in-person and is available online for online rental.
