The Young Friends and PHLAFF Present – El Spooky 13th
Join the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) and the Philadelphia Latino Arts and Film Festival for El Spooky 13th - a fun evening of genre-short films from the Latine Diaspora.
Café Negro Con Genre's Eunice Levis and Ghouls Next Door's Gabe Castro will co-host this program – and showcase two of their spookiest shorts Selections: Eunice Levis' InVade and Gabe Castro's Jolly Butcher.
In addition to the spooky short films by Eunice Levis and Gabe Castro, viewers will also be able to see some genre shorts that screened in previous PHLAFF seasons.
The event will take place on October 13th at the PMA East Terrace and begin at approximately 6 PM EST. Tickets and/or reservations are required for this event, but it is free to PMA members. Guests can pay $5 to enjoy the festivities.
Writer and director, Eunice Levis is a first-generation Dominican American from the Bronx, New York. Eunice's work focuses on genre bending stories that combine her love of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy often through a diasporic lens. She is a two-time Sundance Lab Second Rounder, a Stowe Story Lab Fellow, and a Netflix/NALIP Women of Color Short Film Incubator fellow. Eunice’s Caribbean folklore horror micro short FELL ENDS was an extraordinary selection at NYX’s 13 minutes of horror film festival and streamed on Shudder.
Eunice currently has two short films in the festival circuit. InVade, an environmental dark sci-fi which made the second round of the 2020 Sundance Episodic Lab with its pilot script. And, Ro & The Stardust, a space fantasy short which won Best Narrative Short at the 25th Annual Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival, making it a 2024 Oscar® qualified Narrative Short Film.
In addition to writing and directing, Eunice is an adjunct professor at Saint Joseph’s University and cohosts Café Negro con Genre, a podcast that promotes creatives working in the genre space. She has a graduate degree from New York University and is managed by 3 Arts Entertainment.
Gabe Castro (they/she) is a Philadelphia-based Latine multimedia professional specializing in the horror genre. They work at Philadelphia's public access TV station as the Member Programming Manager helping their community make people-powered media. They are also the producer and co-host of the horror media analysis podcast, Ghouls Next Door. The Ghouls explore how society and culture influence our cinematic fears. Gabe believes media can be used as a tool to bring social change and works in all she does to create impactful and inspiring media. When they're not hosting podcasts, they direct award-winning short horror-comedies and design terrifying soundscapes for the Black Women are Scary Podcast that celebrates people of color writing in horror.
