In a male-dominated comedy scene, Gabi, a thirty-something Latina, struggles to make her mark. By imitating the strong women in her family, she breaks through.

One day, before a stand-up comedy open mic, Tía Mayra gives Gabi a makeover. Gabi rushes to the open mic to find that her fellow comedians do not recognize her. Instead, they suggest she "go to the cumbia club around the corner." Gabi realizes that Tía Mayra’s makeover gives her a whole new persona. Inspired, she decides to use a stage name, Mariposa. On stage, she impersonates her Tía Mayra and gets laughs. As a result, Gabi, aka Mariposa, gets asked to perform in her first real comedy show.
