A su propio ritmo (At Its Own Rhythm) lifts the curtain on a mostly unknown audiovisual archive chronicling the early years of the Cuban Revolution: the Noticiero ICAIC Latinoamericano (ICAIC Latin American Newsreel).

Produced under difficult conditions between 1960 and 1990, and directed by Santiago Álvarez, the Noticiero documented the revolutionary struggles of Cuba and other ‘Third World’ nations. A su propio ritmo juxtaposes archival newsreel images and contemporary interviews with Cuban film critics, directors, and cultural officials to reflect on the powerful imagery created by ICAIC and the vital role it played n reshaping the iconography of the revolutionary movements of the twentieth century.

Colombian-Canadian director Jorge Ayala-Isaza mixes the politically-charged visuals with an eclectic soundtrack that captures the Zeitgeist of the Cold War years.
