About the Filmmaker

Julen Martínez Olivares is a Mexican filmmaker from Veracruz, with a degree in cinematography from the Luis Buñuel Veracruz Film School. As a director, he has explored his interests through documentary filmmaking. At Mascara contra Cabellera uses that background to dive into Caleb’s mind and his “Lucha“.

He explores the conflicting parental approval in Mexican families through "Lucha Libre". Wrestling is a high-risk sport where those who dedicate it professionally have developed a deep sense of responsibility, discipline, and dedication, which entails enormous sacrifice of mind and body; all for the purpose of entertaining and excite the masses. Caleb, the protagonist, is in the learning process, where: “With humility, you can achieve more”.

The short film creates a raw atmosphere that shows the background and life of the masked man before entering the ring. It draws aesthetic and narrative inspiration by films from the 2000s, as well as from contact sports cinema, portraying a pessimistic reality with glimmers of hope. All of this realized through cinematography, erratic camera movements, and strident lighting; production design, decay urban spaces; an unperfect sound design.
