Los Angeles Canvas

About the Film

Inspired by the 20th-century Mexican Mural Movement, a new generation of artists in the late 1960s began creating street murals to advocate for social and racial justice, amplify underrepresented narratives that challenged mainstream American historiography, and express their community’s cultural identity. Los Angeles emerged as the epicenter of this movement, which spread throughout the Southwest and beyond. Through an intimate narrative and powerful visuals, this film explores the intersection of art, space, and politics, illuminating a cultural revolution that shaped a broader movement for resistance, visibility, and equality.
