About the Filmmaker
Kira Powell is a writer-director and actor of African American and Ecuadorian heritage. She holds an MFA in Directing from the American Film Institute Conservatory. Her AFI thesis short BEST EYES was nominated for a 57th NAACP Image Award, won the 2024 DGA Student Film Jury Award, and screened at festivals including LALIFF and Urbanworld.
Working across intimate coming-of-age drama and psychological storytelling, her films explore identity and inheritance through multiracial and immigrant experiences, examining how love, protection, and survival shape behavior within families and the pressure they create.
She is currently developing her feature films BEST EYES and THE SECOND CHILD.
